Dear Dr. Pam: What is your opinion of the Paleo Diet?
The Paleo Diet was popularized in a book of the same name written by Loren Cordain. I have heard Dr. Cordain speak, and while I respect his intellect, I disagree with his conclusions. Dr. Cordain claims that people thrive on a diet based on lean meats and fish, non-starchy vegetables, and fruits. He offers as evidence the fact that Paleolithic people thrived on such a diet and that we are genetically designed to eat the same diet as our ancestors.
The evidence does not support his statements, however. I have challenged many people who advocate this diet to provide published evidence of a successful modern population that lives on such a diet, or evidence showing that this diet prevents, stops the progression of, or reverses degenerative disease. No one has provided such evidence. We do have such evidence to support a well-structured plant-based diet, so I'll continue to recommend it.
Another issue is that I, along with many researchers, question the assertion that our ancestors ate a meat-based diet. Paleolithic humans had no technology to assist them in hunting and killing prey, and were considerably slower than most of the animals they pursued. At the time, there was no way to preserve meat for future use. Although our ancestors did eat meat and fish, the fact that these foods comprised the majority of the diet remains unproven.
But this becomes somewhat irrelevant because we are not hunter/gatherers or cave dwellers any more. I have asked two questions of every group I've spoken to in the last year:
(1) are there any hunter/gatherers or cave dwellers in this audience, or do you know anyone who fits this description?
(2) Are there any baby calves in attendance?
The answer to both is always "no." We can then agree not to talk about Paleolithic diets or cow's milk since there are no constituents for whom these diets or foods would be appropriate.
