not sure of your point....
the article describes a debate (both sides) going on right now IN the JAMA.

the debate is in essence "should statins be used for primary prevention"

read the article again knowing both sides are being presented, I think you'll see it in a different light.

read here on the new feature of the JAMA, started in the most recent issue, that seems to me to have been designed for the statin debate.. A new editor I believe, who appears to have some scruples....time will tell.

Yes David, article you give reference to describes a debate within JAMA. HOWEVER, when I looked in reference list, only JAMA article I saw quoted is standard party line about "Statins are Wonderful".

On repeated, careful rereading of Jon Barron's article I finally found reference to JAMA article titled "Healthy Men Should Not Take Statins" by Rita F. Redberg, MD; Mitchell H. Katz, MD http://jama.amaassn.org/content/307/14/ ... html%3e%22

Jon Barron's article is nice, however, I am one of those folks that much prefers to read original material rather than someone's rehash/summary.

Thank you for providing article with references to actual JAMA articles.

It will be wonderful should statins be phased out extensively, even totally as far as I am concerned. I too hope "statins are bad" realization snowballs and that cholesterol scam meets its well deserved demise -- but, I will remain skeptical tills I see that actually happen.

Whenever I finally decide to visit some doctor for another round of blood tests, I will take copies of these JAMA articles along. Could be fun!!

you want original, try google or JAMA online, do some research...we live in the info age and you demand spoon feeding...

google "JAMA statin debate" or some such to watch the debate in the blogosphere....this is going to be hugh..I predict...

jeesee David, have a nice beer and calm down.

IF I spent enough time to Google search EVERY topic of interest I would get little else done and not be nearly as informed, especially in fields I do not follow closely, such as statin stuff presently. Happily, I am now in stage of enjoying my post-Lipitor life, so, my once heavy digging into statin stuff has backed way off.

I do continue get free Internet New England Journal of Medicine, will see if JAMA has similar offering.
